01

Write a one-page timeline

Record the date, place, people involved, what happened, and what you observed afterward. Mark uncertain details as uncertain. Include the dates of medical visits and any missed work.

  • Incident date and location
  • Names and contact details you already have
  • Key treatment and work dates
02

Gather records you already have

Bring available photos, incident or police report details, medical visit summaries, bills, insurance letters, and messages about the event. You do not need a complete file before asking for help. Keep originals and use a secure method to share sensitive records.

  • Photos and report numbers
  • Medical summaries and bills
  • Insurance and employer correspondence
03

Prepare questions

Ask whether the firm handles this type of matter, who would work on it, what it needs to assess next steps, and how fees and expenses work. Tell the firm about any insurer contact or paperwork you have signed.

04

After the conversation

Write down what the firm requested, what it said it would do, and when you expect a response. If you receive an agreement, read it before signing and ask about any term you do not understand.
