Get the individual lawyer’s name
A firm name or directory card is not enough to check a license. Ask which lawyer would be responsible for your matter, and in which states that lawyer is admitted.
Use the licensing authority
Find the attorney regulator for the relevant state and search its official record. Check the license status and any public disciplinary information the authority provides. Some jurisdictions use a state bar; others use a court or separate agency.

Confirm scope directly
A valid license does not establish that a lawyer currently handles your case type. Ask whether the firm can take the matter, who will do the work, and whether a different lawyer or firm would be involved.
